Matrilineality is a system in which lineage is traced through the mother and maternal ancestors. A matriline is a line of descent from a female ancestor to a descendant (of either sex) in which the individuals in all intervening generations are female.
I can trace my matriline back about three centuries, and one generation more than my patriline:
|III||Grandma is very old, but still alive. So no information about her, yet.|
|IV||Johanna Petronella Moerman (1875-1953) lived in Rotterdam all her life. She married Hendrikus Franciscus Coppens in 1896. Of their seven children, one died in infancy, two died in their 40s or 50s, and four lived to ripe old age (one of them - my grandmother - is still alive). I plan to write a blog post about the Coppens-Moerman family soon.|
|V||Johanna Petronella Brandenburg (1857-1891), also was born, lived and died in Rotterdam. She married Cornelis Jacobus Moerman (1857-1943). Six of their eight children reached adulthood.|
|VI||Anna Daggelder (1817-1898) was born in Giessen. At the time of her wedding she lived as a maidservant in Rotterdam. She became the second wife of Henderik Brandenburg (1801-1881), a coffee roaster. I have five children for Henderik and Anna (three of them reached adulthood), but my list may be incomplete. Henderik also had children from his first marriage, some of them probably lived with Henderik and Anna.|
|VII||Maaike van Pelt (1777-1834). She was born (and probably grew up) in Woudrichem. She married Hardenburg Daggelder in 1799. After the wedding, they lived in Hardenburg's home town Giessen. They had at least six children, one died in infancy, five reached adulthood and married.|
|VIII||Kuijndertje Alblas (1744-after 1787). Kuijndertje was baptized (and probably born) in Woudrichem. She married Hendrik van Pelt. They had at least seven children, who were baptized in Woudrichem.|
|IX||Jannegje Nieuwekuijk. She married Gijsbert Alblas in Woudrichem in 1733. Gijsbert and Jannegje had at least six children, all baptized in Woudrichem. I have no further information yet.|
|X||According to Anthony Hofstee's website, Jannegje's mother is Maijke Sijmens Tabberts (1668-bef. 1708). I have not yet confirmed that. She married Cuijndert Jans (van) Nieuwekuijk.|
|XI||The line (currently) ends with Lijske Teunis Botermaet, wife of Sijmen Sijmens Tabbert (also according to Anthony Hofstee and not verified by me).|
